Series 5: Episode 6
On Air 13th June 2009
In this episode, comedian Dave Grant travels to Victoria’s high country… a place steeped in history and tales of mountain men and their extraordinary talent on horseback. First stop is one of Australia’s tiniest towns, Licola… it’s three and a half hours drive north east of Melbourne, and whilst it’s only got a population of eight, this place certainly gets the adrenalin pumping. The Lions Club bought the entire town, yes that’s right the whole town, and runs the Licola Wilderness Village…it originally started as a haven for school camps, but now anyone can come for a visit… and this place will certainly test your nerves. First off there’s the high ropes course, which isn’t for the faint hearted, but it is an exhilarating experience, and of course thanks to a five point body harness, totally safe…it just feels like you’re falling off a giant pole!! Next try your balancing skills on the a wire walk collaquially known as the ‘Burma Bridge’… but the ultimate here is the flying fox… those up for the challenge are hoisted tens of metres into the air, and on the count of three, its time to start flying through the air….but don’t worry, safety is paramount here. The Wilderness Village can accommodate up to 250 people, in self contained three bedroom houses…it’s a fantastic experience and host Adam Wake will definitely look after you. From there Dave travels over the mountain to the quaint village of Jamieson… its where the Goulburn and Jamieson Rivers meet…in the 1860’s this rural village was full of gold prospectors hopeful of fame and fortune…many of them found it, and locals still try their luck , panning for the previous metal in the mineral-rich waters. The museum is steeped in history… it’s jam packed with farming and domestic memorabilia, and it’s also home to the original Jamieson lockup, where Prince Charles once paid a visit…not as a prisoner of course… but as a Royal Tourist. Across the road from the museum is the famous Court House Hotel … a place that travellers have been resting their weary heads for nearly a century… at the gateway to the high country, it also boasts award winning chicken parmiagianas… according to Dave Grant, they score a ten out of ten, and should be declared one of the seven wonders of the world. The country out here is magic, and really should be on your list of places to visit…there is an enormous number of camping and caravan sites along numerous waterways… it’s peaceful, serene and lets you experience a true ‘back to nature’ adventure.
