Series 5: Episode 4
On Air 30th May 2009 From our base in Rockhampton 600 kilometres north of Brisbane, this week we’re off to the historic mining town of Mount Morgan half an hour away. Established in 1882, it was a thriving settlement...miners flocked to the area in search of fame and fortune, and many of them found it...gold, silver and copper were extracted from the earth... The mines have been long shut, but mount Morgan is a must when you’re in this neck of the woods...steeped in history, the architecture is magnificent, and you simply must visit the historic railway station... The silver wattle caravan park is the play to stay when you’re visiting... Laid back and friendly, feel free to make yourself at home. A short drive away, and guess what...you’ll find yourself smack bang in the tropic of Capricorn....its right where the tropics actually begin...the Capricorn coast is a great spot for anyone who loves the water....you can take your pick of activities here....sailing, boating or just fishing from the shore.....its so peaceful here...its a cliché, but how’s the serenity!!!! Back in Rockhampton its time to have a look at the famous botanical gardens… they’re regarded as among the best in regional Australia...they’re simply stunning, and the giant banyan fig trees are over 100 years old. Next up its time to visit the extraordinary Capricorn Caves - ancient limestone monuments with their very own natural acoustics... We’re told they’re better than the Sydney Opera house. The caves are an easy half hour drive north of rocky, and were discovered by Norwegian pioneer John Olson over a hundred years ago...they’re actually above ground chambers of stalactites and flowstones… they’ll take your breath away. A massive population of tiny bent wing bats call the caves home...they won’t hurt you, but it’s a different experience when a 20-thousand strong flock fly overhead!!! But the caves aren’t the only stand out attraction here...the magnificent Fireclay Caves, which were used for clay excavation in the early 1920’s, are the home of the worlds most significant specimens of dinosaur footprints... Its like our very own Jurassic park, and was inhabited by the huge creatures more than 200 million years ago. That takes us to the end of our Mount Morgan journey, but you can discover down under in sunny Queensland for yourself at this years caravan, camping and touring holiday show, June 3-9th at the RNA Showgrounds, Gregory Terrace Brisbane ...there will hundreds of exhibits featuring all the latest caravans, camper trailers, motor homes, tents, accessories and much, much more.
