Series 5: Episode 14

Situated three hours drive south east of Melbourne, Wilson’s Promontory is Victorias favourite National Park…it’s known as ‘The Prom” to most people and every year nearly three hundred thousand people come to visit this iconic piece of paradise.

The National Park spans fifty thousand square kilometres and its pristine beaches and the safe Tidal River make it an ideal place to cool off during the hot summer months.

There’s great surfing and snorkelling off the many beaches that fringe The Proms perimeter, but there’s also a huge array of great hiking tracks…from beginner levels, to overnight treks…it doesn’t matter whether you’re young or old, fit or not, everyone can join in.

One of the hikes takes you to the top of Mount Oberon, and from here you can see virtually the whole Prom, plus the many islands that dot the coastline…The sweeping coastline of Norman’s Beach, the river and the pristine vegetation.

The Prom is also the most southern part of mainland Australia. Thirty kilometres from the park entrance is the Tidal River camping ground…some families have been coming here for their annual holidays for decades, so its virtually an institution.

In fact its become so popular, that a ballot system has been devised to make sure the allocation of camping spots is fair to everyone.

The prom also has some of the most picturesque drives you’ll ever find…the ocean backdrop, as you wind your way through the park is sensational!!!

About an hours drive off the prom is the quaint town of Toora and guess what? This was one of the first places to have its own hydro electric plant.

Toora is nestled on the South Gippsland Highway and was settled in the 1870’s after the discovery of tin at the base of the nearby Strzelecki Ranges.

Toora has a terrific Top Tourist Park, beautifully equipped for families and grey nomads alike.

Also worth a look when you’re in this neck of the woods is the Stony Creek Go Cart Track… it’s a little bit off the beaten track, get it!!! But it’s a great place to belt the bitumen and burn some rubber!!!
