Series 5: Episode 10

On Air 18th July 2009 (Channel 9)
This week Frank has left the girls at home and is getting up close and personal in a Jayco Conquest motor home as he goes exploring in and around Victoria’s second largest city and one of the country’s most significant wool ports...oh and it’s also the home of the Ford motor car...imagine that!!! A Holden in Ford country.

Â

First up it’s time for a catch up with AFL Geelong legend Cameron Ling...he runs a waterfront café in his spare time, but wasn’t too busy to have a kick with Frank on the proviso that Mr Holden teaches him a thing or two about singing...of course things got nasty when Frank broke out into the blues theme song...

Frank spends a lot of time at the beautifully refurbished waterfront...home to one hundred and eleven character bollards, made by a late local artist and depicting characters synonymous with the city’s history.

He gets a birds eye view of the coast during a helicopter joy ride and then takes to the sea along the coast with a cruise on the Freedom Bay Cruises.

Food is a huge part of the Geelong cultural landscape, and Frank visits a local seafood institution after his efforts with a line failed dismally...armed with local snapper and scallops he heads to the wacky Oakdene Winery for a cooking lesson with award winning chef Marty Chichester.

From the winery, Torquay beckons and Frank can’t go past a surfing lesson at one of the best big waves beaches around...of course he comes off a few times, but...that’s life !!!!

He has brought his pushbike along and takes in the marvellous Torquay track, which contours this coastline and is picture perfect.

The El Dorado Tourist Park is where he parks his van... it’s beautifully appointed with numerous accommodation options, and plenty of things to keep the kids occupied.

Sadly the holiday is nearly over, but Frank has two museums to take in before he packs his bags...the Wool Museum houses in a heritage listed building, gives a birds eye insight into how fleece helped shaped Geelong’s agricultural architecture… Next stop the Ford Discovery Centre...initially the workers were wary...letting a Holden in seemed like a no no, but in the end the staff were wonderful. There’s seven decades of Ford models on display...including Australia’s first ever ute, an original patrol car from the boys in blue of yesteryear.
