Alert | | When camping and the weather forecast is for a strong wind that night, I tie the ropes of my tent to 600mm star pickets that I've hammered deep into the ground. Much more secure than a flimsy old tent peg!

Alert | Great idea, and I guess you would use them all the time regardless of how the weather was? Otherwise, I couldn't justify carrying star pickets if it meant they were just extra gear - in case. Weather, fortunately, doesn't affect us now when we camp, as we have a caravan, and we can just roll the awning up! LOL.

Alert | | We bought tent pegs in Cooma NSW. They're specially hardened for hard/cold/icy gorund and will go in almost everywhere. Even Coober Pedy. Our pegs went in when everyone else's were bending. Take up far less room than star pickets as well.

Alert | We use those screw in dog pegs that you can buy at cheap shops for a couple of bucks, then use small ratchet straps on them they can also be used in sandy soil, a good tip is to twist the ratchet straps a few times as this stops them humming in the wind.
