I am soon to be laid off March 2009 at age 59, (like more and more of us) so instead of vegging at home feeling sorry for myself we are thinking of fulfilling a dream from years ago, travel the country, what are the draw backs, problems, benefits, is there work out there for the short or long stays, we would be looking at being away six months to whatever. We will be living in our caravan, I do not foresee any problems there, the tow vehicle is sound also.

If you have done it or are doing it please pass on your thoughts, are there clubs etc, how do you pay Tax do you need a ABN #.

First of al do not sell your home, you may not be able to afford to buy back into the market once you finish travelling. There are heaps of web site that you can go to in each state that list seasonal work, if you wanted to you could follow the seasons right around Australia and fund your travelling and have a great holiday while doing so.

No you do not need an ABN to do casual work, but you do need a tax file number.

Cheers and safe travelling. John - Qld.

Hi there - I think its great that you are going to get away, and last I heard there are plenty of places across regional Australia who are screaming out for people to come work for them - so have a ball and make money whilst you are at it!

Must be the age! We are also keen to get some inside knowledge of 'grey army' travel around Australia. Both fit and well and happy to wok at whatever is available during our travels but eager to find out the ins and outs of 'taking off' and spending the kids inheritance. Thinking of renting out our house, buying a campervan and travelling for around 12 months - what sort of costs might be involved (aside from the obvious ones) and what might we miss in the planning stages? How long does it take to plan such a big adventure? We work & travel together really well, enjoy the same things, love our kids and grandchildren but don't get to see much of them as they are all over 5 hours drive away and have their own lives and commitments to consider (don't you just LOVE skype!) so really want to take advantage of our good health and sense of adventure while we can. Still have a mortgage and both working full time but hope to get going in around two years time - any words of wisdom? Happy to hear all points of view. Cheers.

My partner and i are travelling Aust next month and hope to be able to get work as we go. I am a fully qualified motor mechanic (cars, 4wd's, outboards etc) She has experience in many things inc garden, landscaping, office aqdministration etc.
Starting in South Oz and headed probably to Esperance as first stop. Bit nervous about the job situation and work availability. We have wireless laptops. We have a caravan all set up. Need some reassurance that we are doing the right thing here and any other advice from you that are doing or done this. Cheers,
