FINDERS KEEPERS AT GEMFEST - FOSSIKER CARAVAN PARK
A great reason to visit this town . . . . Fossicking around a town that was once home to 30 odd mines is bound to unearth some decent treasures. Â Emmaville is a small town in New England with a population of just 350 and each spring, it hosts an annual Gemfest to support its Mining Museum, a key tourism attraction in the town run entirely by volunteers.
Fossickers can find themselves searching for tin, topaz, flourite, quartz, silver, tourmaline or copper. After tin was first discovered in Emmaville in1872, prospectors began pouring into the town and by the early1900s its population was around 7,000. Along with its tin mines, there were two silver mines and an emerald mine. The Grampian Range, five kilometres northwest of Emmaville, is noted as one of the richest mineral belts in Australia, with 27 known minerals. The Emmaville Mining Museum began when the Curnow family bequeathed their mineral and photo collection to the community and an old store was converted into the museum. Be sure to stay at Fossicker Caravan Park - Glen Innes - Fully self contained brick villas with reverse cycle air conditioning, only a 200m walk from the RSL and the town centre.
