Hi Guys, I am 64 (65 in Oct this year) and want to take my 4x4 on a camping trip up the eastern coast to cairns, Great Barrier reef, kakadu, Darwin, and back through the Center, eventually getting back to Melbourne over say 8 week period at least. Most outings will be camping and occasionally at a motel to refresh etc.
Looking for advise as to what to expect and what to take with us to cover emergencies etc. Has anybody in here done such a trip and your friendly advises would be appreciated.

Regards

Hi Barry

Wife and I did this trip a few years back, when we were between caravans. Threw our sons dome tent in the boot of the Ford EB Fairmont, together with sleeping bags and a bit of camping gear and away we went. Left Newcastle mid May, headed to Dubbo, Broken Hill, Port Augusta, up the Stuart Highway, branched off to Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon, backtracked to the Stuart again, Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, Katherine, all the way to Darwin, then back to Three Ways, through Camoweal, Mt Isa, all the way to Townsville, then up to Cairns and back down the east coast back to Newcastle.

Was an absolutely fantastic trip. We never left the tar once. Unfortunately am still working and only had 6 weeks leave. We were to be home end of June and had to hurry towards the end because was running out of time. Was not real concerned as we'd been up the Queensland coast on previous occasions.

Most of the stops were tenting but a few times we stayed in cabins. One of these was Coober Pedy, where we were told we could pitch the tent but there was no grass, only gravel. They offered us a bit of matting to put the tent on but we elected to stay in a cabin. We stayed in a cabin at Tennant Creek on the way back because we wanted to get an early start to head to Mt Isa.

We will definitely do this trip again but will do it over a lot longer than 6 weeks, so it may be a retirement plan.

I would stay longer at Litchfield National Park and less at Kakadu next time. I would also like more time at both Alice Springs, to explore both East and West McDonnell Ranges, and at Uluru. Coober Pedy was a two night stopover and would like an extra night or two next time. Similarly Broken Hill, doesnt sound like you're passing through here but its worth a trip, maybe on another occasion if you haven't been there. Cairns was a five nighter but would stay less there next time.

I could go on and on, but I think they're the basics. Send me a PM is you'd like any more info.

Cheers
Ross

Hey Ross thanks for that - approx 5 mths ago, we did the trip from Melbourne to Port Augusta,up to Coober pedy, The Flinders ranges (Absolutely Great) The oodnadatta Track etc, Lake Eyre and back down to east coast of South Australia, Naracoorte and back home - It was fantastic. I will formally retire in October this year, and want to get away for at least 8-10 weeks before life gets away from me. More concerned these days with communication is something goings wrong, as I am a type 1 diabetic, and wondering If i should get a satellite phone etc. Will go to the Camping show in melbourne next march, and see whats around. need to get info is we have to make any bookings etc in advance, or just take pot luck. Put aside approx $15,000 for this trip, and that should be enough if we plan carefully. We are both lovers of Wildlife and national parks etc, and i also have a hobby of collecting seeds from plants, as I am a volunteer with "Tree Projects Victoria" If you wish my email address id barry@bjrconsulting.com.au
Cheers
