Alert | | I am interested to hear from poptop owners of 18/19 ft vans with ensuites as to the noise and heat/cold transfer factors associated with poptops. Can't decide whether a poptop is suitable. During heavy rain is the noise too bad? How about retracting it in the rain?

Alert | Tricia We have had pop-tops for about 6 years, and totalled some 50,000KM travelling and accumulated about 15 months 'living time'in them. Our experience is as follows: Heat transfer issues - yes, can be a problem. For heat issues, you can try running a 'rope-track' along the pop top edges and then use sheets of shadecloth to shade the parts of the van needing shade. We handle this with 3 sheets of shadecloth - one 6ft x 12 ft, and two 6ft square each. For cold issues, we grin and bear it - using an electric convection heater if on a powered site, extra jumpers if not. Noise in the rain - can be bad, but fortunately doesn't happen too often (we mainly travel during the Melbourne winter when we head north). We solved a lot of problems by running extension speakers from the TV to the sitting area and bed head - so we can run the TV fairly loud to overcome the rain. The noise id caused by the rain drops hitting the roof, so putting the top down probably would not help much. Cheers KenF
