We're looking at upgrading our GPS and have looked at buying the Magellan Crossover. At about $1300 it does seem pretty expensive, but probably not for what you get. I'd like some thoughts from others who have one on its accuracy and general dependability, especially for outback use.

If you want a 'true' GPS and don't need a street-by-street navigator get a Magellan Meridian or a Garmin - whatever, as long as it is a dedicated GPS.

if you want a street-by-street navigator AND a GPS - that does most everything a dedicated GPS does - then the CrossOver is pretty good.

i have a Garmin ique3600. have had for over 2 yrs and found it very easy to use and very accurate. it has showed meways on roads that even the hemma maps dont show when your in the flinders ranges etc the unit is easy to stow in your shirt pocket when walking but the battery life out of the cradel is only 2hrs. the latest model does more than mine now but i just update it each year with the mapping and i havent got lost yet

We use Garmin Map60c GPS which is mounted on the dash and swivels to enable access by driver and co driver. This unit is also hard wired to the vehicles electrical system and has USB cable for connection to our laptop.

The Garmin connects to our laptop via USB cable and gives us real time mapping ability using Oziexplorer software and Natmaps. Real time mapping (also called "moving map") ability is a good addition to our bag of tricks. To know where you are and how far you need to travel to get there is handy. We never have arguments over if we are heading the right direction! The track recording function allows us to re trace our steps to past sites we have visited or even share with other people. We still carry paper maps as these are still easier to look over and make decisions from; these also are backup in case of electronic failure.

Cheers

I bought a Mio DigiWalker PDA (a pocket PC with a built-in GPS) in 2005, for about $800. It runs Co-Pilot Live GPS software and came with Australian maps. It also has Pocket Word, Pocket Excel and heaps of other software, including games, and you can even download free scriptures, etc. I used this very successfully for 18 months, then just prior to a trip to England purchased the UK software and maps on eBay for about $100. It was terrific to have my very own guide for driving my hire car around a completely unfamailiar road system. Made one boo-boo though - planned to drive from South London to Yorkshire one evening and instead of taking me onto the M25 ring road, it navigated me right through the City of London!
My next purchase in this area will be probably be a GPS combined with a rear-view camera, such as that produced by Polaris.
